Brief

The project aims to understand the unique refrigerator usage patterns of immigrant households in the United States, a country with the world's largest foreign-born population. Immigrant families face distinct challenges when it comes to food storage and preparation, often influenced by dietary acculturation, limited access to ethnic grocery stores, and the need for bulk buying. This research will explore how these challenges impact refrigerator use and identify pain points, patterns, and gaps in their current storage solutions.

Secondary Research

We conducted secondary research covering various aspects of refrigerators, including the history of their development, global market trends, and popular brands with trending features. Our research also explored different types of fridges, user behavior across countries, and identified patterns, gaps, and pain points among users. This provided valuable insights into the current market landscape and user needs.

Observation

We conducted 4 one-hour observations at participants' houses, documenting 60 records for each observation. This was a non-participant observation where we took notes on what we observed, focusing on the ideal experience of the target group. We recorded our findings in an Excel spreadsheet with two columns: Observations and Remarks.

Screener

We created a screener to filter potential participants based on our recruitment criteria. This included screener questions to ensure they met the necessary qualifications and exclusion questions to eliminate those who didn’t fit the profile.

Recruitment Plan and Interview Question

Interview

We conducted eight one-hour interviews, each involving a moderator and a notetaker. Our discussion guide featured impactful questions, incorporating Open, Heart-Based, and Future-Oriented Questions to encourage meaningful dialogue.

Sensory Cue Workshop

We conducted four sensory cue activities to better understand user needs and behaviors around refrigerator design. The first activity focused on identifying which ingredients and fridge areas users prioritize, along with common frustrations tied to layout or storage habits. The second explored how users’ diverse food cultures and routines shape what and how they store ingredients. The third examined sensory expectations and emotional responses—such as preferences related to smell, noise, and touch—uncovering usability and lifestyle integration needs. Finally, the fourth activity invited participants to draw their ideal fridge, revealing their aesthetic preferences and functional priorities.

Affinitization

Emotion Framework

In our refrigerator experience design for global users, we created a framework that focuses on delivering a "limitless" user experience — one that supports emotional connection and seamless usability. This framework is built around four core emotional states: At Ease, In Control, Inspired, and Seen.
